Have you ever driven down a quiet street at night and seen a mysterious shape in the shadows – tall, aloof, peculiar – and wondered to yourself, “Does that suspicious figure belong here?”, or is that an eerie and otherworldly presence, maybe even a figment of the imagination? If you said yes, you’re not alone. Thousands of people every year report sightings of a creature who has come to be called The Stranger.
Creatures that exist on both sides of the waking world have haunted our imaginations since the dawn of mankind, from stories of will-o-the-wisps lighting up cemeteries in European folklore, to internet phenomenon like the Slenderman who would terrify people by being diabolically out of place and time.
The Stranger walks in these traditions, a being of dreams and nightmares, of reality and unreality. Many people have reported staring right at The Stranger for several minutes before realizing it was standing there, looking right back at them. As soon as it is discovered, The Stranger flees into the shadows.
“I wasn’t sure what I was looking at, at first,” recalled regionally recognized leg-and-calf model Marissa Volaré, “but then that strange figure adjusted what it was wearing. I’m pretty sure it was a cryptid. I mean, I’ve heard of The Stranger, before, but I never thought I’d see a real cryptid in person. Then it ran out of the locker room.”

When should you expect to encounter The Stranger? While sightings are still extremely rare, The Stranger has usually been seen in that liminal time around dusk, when the shadows are long and it is hard to tell what is real and what might be illusion. The Stranger loves to hide in plain sight, but if seen it will flee. Shadowy bushes, back alleys, or rows of parked cars give The Stranger perfect escape routes if caught – The Stranger is a master of escape.
Where can The Stranger be found? This question is harder to answer, as there have been Stranger sightings reported in numerous locales and terrains, however the majority of corroborated sightings were reported as being under first floor windows, near the shaded outskirts of playgrounds, or – when observed in urban areas – near women’s clothing and lingerie stores.
Police have been on the alert for The Stranger, unsure if it is harmless, or something more sinister. Some even wonder if The Stranger is a cryptid at all. “Originally, I was hoping that The Stranger would be one of those cool cryptids, like Dogman,” reported Officer Simmons, “but lately I’m not so sure. He really hangs out way too close to school zones. And I think he’s been taking ladies’ shoes from the Y, but I can’t prove it. Overall, I have very mixed feelings.”

This brings us to the most important question: What is The Stranger? While high quality corroborated sightings are rare, The Stranger is almost universally described as having a masculine shape: tall, medium-to-stocky build, with short red hair, light skin, and wearing a tan or camel colored overcoat. He is not thought to be wearing pants and is sometimes carrying a small stepstool or a pair of women’s shoes. The Stranger’s eye color has been described as either brown or hazel. He’s said to be in his mid forties and answers to Rick or “Weird Richard”.
